Bethel is an experienced investment professional who has worked with early stage businesses across East Africa. Prior to co-founding Startup Factory, Bethel worked for Novastar Ventures, a venture capital manager based out of Nairobi, Kenya focusing on investing in early stage businesses across East and West Africa. Bethel was Investment Manager for Novastar and is currently acting as an advisor to the fund for the Ethiopia portfolio. Prior to Novastar, Bethel also manged an impact fund backed by USAID that invested in 6 companies in Ethiopia. Most of her work focused on start-ups that are creating solutions to pressing challenges for the underserved population at the bottom of the pyramid.
Bethel also has vast experience working with different stakeholders on different capacity within the business community, including Government Institutions, Donors, NGOs, Financial Institutions, technology providers and businesses from various sectors. She has worked on policy issues with institutions such as the National Bank of Ethiopia, particularly focusing on access to finance, looking at alternative finances for businesses. Bethel have worked closely with companies involved in Agri businesses, Fintech, Private Equity and Manufacturing.
Bethel was born and brought up in Addis Ababa, she left Ethiopia to pursue her higher education in the UK, where she studied and worked before her return to Ethiopia in 2013. Bethel holds an MBA in Strategic Management and BSc in Business Management.
